Conquering the Challenging Monte Carlo Layout
Piloting his personally owned 1968 Lotus 49B, a car once driven to victory by two-time world champion Graham Hill, Newey encountered a less-than-ideal start. However, the determined designer fought his way through the field, executing a remarkable overtaking maneuver at the famous Monte Carlo hairpin to ultimately secure an impressive fourth-place finish.
“Newey’s performance at the Historic Monaco GP solidifies his status as a true all-rounder in the world of motorsport. His ability to not only design championship-winning cars but also skillfully pilot them on one of the most demanding circuits is a testament to his unparalleled talent,” remarked motorsport analyst Sarah Merritt.
Legends Converge on the Principality’s Streets
The ‘Serie D’ class, featuring classic cars from 1966 to 1972, witnessed a gathering of motorsport legends. McLaren CEO Zak Brown also took part in the event, driving his historic Williams FW07B in the ‘Race Category F’ for cars from 1977 to 1980.

Newey’s Uncertain Future Fuels Speculation
With Newey’s impending departure from Red Bull in early 2025, speculations abound regarding his next endeavor. Rumors suggest a potential collaboration with Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari, although Newey himself has remained tight-lipped about his future plans.
“There comes a point, I think, where I just felt, as Forrest Gump said: ‘I’m feeling a little bit tired’,” Newey told Sky at the recent Miami Grand Prix. “I’m in a very lucky position where I don’t need to work to live. I work because I enjoy it.”
“I just felt that now was a good time to step back and take a bit of a break and take stock of life, and go travelling a bit. Then maybe at some point, I don’t know when, I’ll be standing in the shower and say: ‘Right, this is going to be the next adventure’. Right now, there is no plan.”
